GitLab guide
How GitLab licensing and pricing works in South Africa (2026)
GitLab tiers, Premium list price, Ultimate custom pricing, credits and add-ons, quarterly reconciliation, 15% VAT and buying in USD or ZAR through a local partner.
By Spreeze team · Published · 6 min read
GitLab sells three tiers: Free, Premium at a list price of US$29 per user per month (billed annually), and Ultimate, which is now custom-priced. South African organisations can buy directly from GitLab in USD or through a local authorised partner, paying in USD or ZAR (your choice). A local tax invoice adds VAT at 15%, which VAT vendors can usually claim back as input tax. On top of seats, budget for AI usage (GitLab Credits), optional add-ons, and users you add during the year.
This guide explains each element with its source. All vendor prices are in USD and were checked on 13 October 2026.
The tiers
| Tier | List price | Compute minutes / month | Storage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | US$0 | 400 | 10 GiB | 5 users per top-level group on GitLab.com |
| Premium | US$29 per user/month, billed annually | 10,000 | 500 GiB | Same list price for GitLab.com and Self-Managed |
| Ultimate | Custom pricing | 50,000 | 500 GiB | Unlimited guest users |

Two pieces of history explain much of the confusion online:
- Premium rose from US$19 to US$29 per user per month from 3 April 2023, according to GitLab’s announcement. Old blog posts still show US$19.
- Ultimate no longer has a list price. Several aggregator sites still quote US$99 per user per month. Do not budget on that number. You need a quote.
GitLab’s pricing page also notes that pricing may vary when you buy through a partner or reseller. For help choosing a tier, read GitLab Premium vs Ultimate.
AI: GitLab Credits and Duo
GitLab’s AI features are now largely usage-based.
- GitLab Credits cost US$1 each on demand, with volume discounts for annual commitments. They were introduced with the GitLab Duo Agent Platform in GitLab 18.8 (January 2026) and are billed at month end.
- Included credits (promotional). At the time of checking, GitLab included US$12 of credits per user per month on Premium and US$24 on Ultimate. GitLab describes this as a limited-time offer that can change, and the pricing page marks it as GitLab.com only. If you run Self-Managed, confirm what applies to you before you budget.
- Duo Core is included with Premium and Ultimate from GitLab 18.0. GitLab’s add-ons documentation notes that from 21 May 2026 (GitLab 19.0), Duo Core users no longer have non-agentic chat.
- Duo Pro and Duo Enterprise remain seat-based add-ons on Premium or Ultimate. Duo Enterprise is bought through GitLab sales or a partner. Existing seat commitments can convert to credits.
Budgeting tip: treat AI as a separate line with its own cap. Agree internally who can consume credits and review usage monthly for the first quarter.
Other add-ons
| Add-on | List price | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Extra compute minutes | US$10 per 1,000 minutes (one-time) | All plans |
| Extra storage | US$5 per month per 10 GiB, billed annually | Premium, Ultimate |
| Enterprise Agile Planning | US$15 per user/month | Ultimate |
| GitLab Flex | Annual seats-plus-credits commitment | Through GitLab sales or a partner |

Adding users mid-term: quarterly reconciliation
GitLab’s pricing FAQ says quarterly reconciliation is the default for subscriptions created or renewed after 1 August 2021. If you add users during a quarter, you pay for them only for the remaining quarters of the term. GitLab’s example: 50 users added in the third quarter are charged for the fourth quarter only. Without reconciliation, added users are billed at the full annual rate for the term.
What this means for your finance team:
- Expect small quarterly invoices if headcount grows.
- Keep a monthly view of billable users. Remove leavers promptly.
- On Ultimate, Guest users do not consume a seat. On Premium they do.
Buying from South Africa: direct or through a partner
Direct from GitLab
You can buy self-serve on GitLab.com or through GitLab sales, normally billed in USD to a card or by bank transfer. If you pay a foreign supplier for services, VAT rules on imported services may apply. SARS changed the electronic services regime from 1 April 2025, and the recipient’s reverse-charge obligation on imported services (section 7(1)(c) of the VAT Act) still applies where services are used for non-taxable purposes. Ask your tax adviser how this applies to you.
Through a local authorised partner
GitLab’s channel programme says Open-track resale partners transact through GitLab authorised distributors in their region. For you, that means:
- A South African tax invoice in USD or ZAR (your choice), showing 15% VAT. SARS states that without a proper tax invoice a business cannot deduct input tax.
- Local payment terms and a supplier you can onboard with your usual vendor documents.
- One contact for renewals, true-ups and add-ons, plus implementation help if you want it.
Spreeze is an authorised GitLab partner (Open track). See our GitLab services for what we offer alongside licences.
VAT and invoices
- South Africa’s standard VAT rate is 15%. The proposed increase to 15.5% was withdrawn.
- For supplies over R5,000, SARS requires a full tax invoice showing, among other things, both parties’ names and addresses, the recipient’s VAT number if it is a vendor, a description, the value, the VAT and the total.
- Ask for quotes that show excl. VAT and incl. 15% VAT lines separately.
Illustrative rand arithmetic
The figures below are arithmetic only, not a quote. They use an illustrative exchange rate of R16.38 per US$1, the reference level on 16 September 2026. Real quotes use the rate on the quote date and include partner margin, bank charges and any vendor price changes.
| Example | USD per year | ZAR excl. VAT | VAT at 15% | ZAR incl. VAT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Premium user (US$29 x 12) | US$348 | R5,700.24 | R855.04 | R6,555.28 |
| 25 Premium users | US$8,700 | R142,506.00 | R21,375.90 | R163,881.90 |
Illustrative only, at R16.38/US$ (16 September 2026). Checked 13 October 2026.
What a good ZAR quote should state
- The exchange rate used and its date.
- How long the quote is valid (for example, 7 days).
- Whether the price is fixed in ZAR or indexed to USD until payment.
- Excl. VAT and incl. VAT totals.
- The subscription term, tier, user count and deployment type.
If you prefer to pay in USD, a local partner can quote and invoice in USD. Neither option is better for everyone. It depends on your treasury policy and how you want to manage currency risk. Our guide to buying foreign software from South Africa covers this in more detail.
Licence region rule
GitLab licences are tied to a geographical region of 6,437 km (4,000 miles) around the Sold To address on the quote. If your users are spread across Africa, read GitLab licensing across Africa before you buy.
