What is GitLab?

One application for the whole software lifecycle

GitLab is an AI-powered DevSecOps platform that brings planning, source code management, CI/CD, security testing and deployment into a single application with one data model and one permission system. Instead of stitching together a repository host, a CI server, a separate scanner and a ticketing tool, teams work in one place, and security findings appear in the merge request where developers can fix them.

Spreeze is listed in GitLab's Authorized Partner Locator as a South African channel partner. We transact through GitLab's authorised distribution for our region, so your subscription is genuine, registered to your organisation and supported by GitLab.

FAQ

GitLab licensing questions

Can't see your question? Ask us directly. We reply within one business day.

How much does GitLab cost in South Africa?
GitLab publishes its prices in US dollars. Premium is listed at US$29 per user per month, billed annually. Ultimate is sold on custom pricing, so it is quoted per deal. We quote in US dollars or, if you prefer, in rand with the exchange rate and validity stated, and add 15% VAT on South African invoices.
Can I buy GitLab on a local invoice instead of a foreign credit card?
Yes. When you buy through Spreeze you receive a South African tax invoice in US dollars or rand, whichever suits your finance team, and pay by EFT. That removes the card-limit, forex and foreign-vendor onboarding problems many finance teams have with direct online purchases.
What is the difference between GitLab Premium and Ultimate?
Premium covers team productivity: advanced CI/CD, code review controls, protected environments, more compute minutes and support. Ultimate adds the security and compliance layer: SAST, DAST, dependency, container and secret scanning with a vulnerability report, security policies, compliance frameworks, portfolio planning and unlimited free guest users. See GitLab Ultimate or our guide Premium vs Ultimate.
Does it matter whether we use GitLab.com or Self-Managed?
The subscription tiers are the same, but the decision affects data residency, who operates the platform and how compute minutes work. Many South African organisations with POPIA or sector-regulator obligations choose Self-Managed. Read GitLab Self-Managed.
What happens if we add users during the year?
GitLab subscriptions are reconciled for extra users. Quarterly reconciliation is the default for subscriptions created or renewed since August 2021, so added seats are billed pro rata rather than waiting for renewal. We help you forecast this so there are no surprise invoices.
Can one licence cover users in other African countries?
Check before you buy. GitLab's licensing policy defines the licensed region as within 4,000 miles (6,437 km) of the "Sold To" address unless GitLab approves otherwise in writing. A contract billed in Johannesburg comfortably covers Southern and East Africa but may not cover users in North Africa. Tell us where your users are and we will structure the deal correctly.
